Research statement:

I study how coordination emerges in groups. My work focuses on how individual actions, which initially appear independent, gradually converge into adaptive, collective patterns of behavior — and on what this transition looks like across multi-modal signals. I’m particularly interested in whether group-level coordination can be explained by mechanisms already known from two-person (dyadic) interaction, or whether larger groups require different explanations altogether — for example, coordination that emerges from local interactions among small subsets of people rather than from everyone tracking everyone else. I approach these questions through Tä, a participatory artwork in which twelve participants nonverbally manipulate piles of colored pebbles, using it as a naturalistic but rigorously measurable experimental environment.

Projects:

  • Building an automated multi-camera computer vision pipeline that converts overhead recordings of Tä sessions into structured, frame-level behavioral data (participant and pebble-pile tracking, phase transitions, individual contribution events).
  • Using this behavioral data to characterize how twelve nonverbally interacting participants move from independent action to coordinated collective patterns over a session, and whether the structure of coordination differs between the early, middle, and late stages.
